After Mohs Surgery

Stitches

Most wounds require two layers of stitches:

• One layer will be under your skin and dissolve in 4 months
• One layer will be over your skin and may require removal within 1-2 weeks
• Stitches can often be removed by your GP or at a walk-in clinic
• Consider avoiding travel until after stitches are removed

Swelling and Bruising

Swelling and bruising are common after surgery and can last up to 1 month:

• Surgery on the scalp, forehead and around the eyes can cause the eyes to swell shut for 2-3 days, and give you a black eye for 2 weeks
• Wounds on the face need to be covered with bandages for 1 week
• Makeup may be applied only after stitches are removed
• Consider scheduling surgery after, or at least 1 month before any big events (e.g., photo sessions, conferences, weddings) to look your best

Pain

Pain is minimal:

• You will be awake during your surgery but the skin where the cancer is found will be numbed with an injection so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure
• Pain after surgery at the site of stitches resolves in most patients within 14 days

Activity

• Light activity and office work that does not cause the heart rate to go up may be resumed the day after surgery as tolerated
• A note for work will be provided if necessary
• You must avoid sun exposure for 2 days if you are having photodynamic light therapy during surgery
• Swimming and exercise (including weight lifting, running, tennis, golf) may be resumed 1 week after suture removal

Complex Cases

Some patients require a second appointment:

• On rare occasions, you may be referred to another specialist for stitches or radiation
• Our office will coordinate this when necessary
